Ford tram based on Volkswagen ID.5 arrives in March

It was up to the head of design of Ford of Europe, Amko Leenarts, to lift the tip of the veil that covers the future SUV of the brand and the first to use the MEB platform of the Volkswagen Group as a base. According to statements by the manufacturer’s style director, the model will be presented on March 21 and promises to be a “Sport Crossover”.sort of a lower, sportier SUV, with a coupe-like look.

This new crossover will be the first to be manufactured by Ford on a German basis, at a time when VW has already announced that the MEB will soon be replaced by the MEB+, a corrected and improved version. This decision is in line with what was revealed by Ford. The blue oval mark made it known that, after this MEB-based crossover there will be only one more new model, and then the North American manufacturer began to use its own platforms. In exchange for using the MEB, Ford gives VW the base for the production of the new Amarok pick-up, extending the collaboration between the two also to the production of commercial vehicles.

The crossover that will be unveiled in the second half of March will share the base of the VW ID.5 and should also show the same philosophy, that of a slimmer SUV with a coupe-like feel. After this model, which is expected to go on the market at the beginning of 2024, the second proposal for the MEB will appear, about which nothing is known, but which will most likely be a more voluminous and conventional SUV.

Ford is expected to resort to less fluid and less aerodynamic styling for its electric vehicles, at least compared to the ID.4 and ID.5. But if the Ford will be different on the outside, under the body it will use the same engines and packages of its German “cousin”, being able to even offer versions with only rear-wheel drive as an alternative to those equipped with two motors and four-wheel drive.
