The US and the EU agree to negotiate a trade pact for electric vehicles

The United States of America (USA) and the European Union (EU) agreed this Friday to start negotiating a trade pact that will guarantee access for both economies to the main minerals used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles.

The announcement was made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in statements to the press after a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House with US President Joe Biden.

As indicated by Von der Leyen, the idea of the agreement is that European companies can access the North American subsidies included in the so-called ‘Inflation Reduction Law’, approved in the United States last year and that the European bloc initially rejected, considering it protectionist.
