Azores with yellow warning for rain, heavy seas and wind

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the nine islands of the Azores under a yellow alert on Monday due to forecasts of maritime unrest, wind and rainfall, which could be strong, starting Tuesday.

According to the IPMA website, for the islands of the western group (Flores and Corvo) the yellow wind advisory (Southbound, turning southwest) will be in effect between 3:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.

From 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, the yellow warning for the islands of Flores and Corvo is due to the sea storm forecast (Northwest waves).

In the Eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria) the the yellow warning is justified by “precipitation, sometimes intense, which can be accompanied by thunderstorms”, between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The IPMA also issued a yellow alert for rainfall, which can sometimes be intense and accompanied by electrical storms, for the islands of the Central group (Terceira, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Faial), between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. this Tuesday.

Those five islands will remain on yellow alert for disturbances at sea (northwest waves) between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The yellow notice is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
