At least eight people died from the passage of Cyclone Freddy in the province of Zambézia, according to preliminary data released this Monday by the Ministry of Health.

It is the second time that the weather has hit the country, after a first blow on February 24, which caused 10 deaths due to adverse conditions over several days.

The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has opened reception centers and has launched Alerts in recent days for the population to abandon precarious housing and riparian areas or areas that are often subject to flooding.

Several neighborhoods in the city of Quelimane are without electricity and without telecommunications.

In addition to Mozambique, the cyclone also hit Malawi, killing 39 people in Blantyre, according to the city’s executive director, quoted by the Associated Press agency.
