Navy warns of maritime disturbances on the mainland between Thursday and Saturday

The Navy and the National Maritime Authority warn this Wednesday of the “considerable worsening” of the weather conditions and maritime disturbances in mainland Portugal between 6:00 a.m. on Thursday and noon on Saturday.

In a statement, these entities refer, based on the forecasts of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), that the marine agitation “will be characterized by waves coming from the northwest quadrant, with an important height that can reach seven meters and a maximum of 13 meterswith an average period that varies between 13 and 16 seconds.

Given these forecasts, the Navy and the National Maritime Authority alert the entire maritime community and the population in general about the precautions to take, both when preparing to go to sea and at sea or in coastal areas.

They alert for the reinforcement of the moorings and the maintenance of a close surveillance of the moored and anchored boats, to avoid walks next to the sea or in areas exposed to maritime agitation, of which the protection pontoons of the ports, cliffs are examples. or beaches, to prevent people from being surprised by high waves.

They also warn the population to avoid recreational fishing, especially off the cliffs and cliffs. often hit by breaking waves, taking into account that in these conditions the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas.

This morning, IPMA had already placed nine districts on the mainland under “yellow notice” until Friday due to forecast of maritime agitation, with waves from the northwest with 4 to 4.5 meters, alert now aggravated by the Navy

The notice is intended for the districts of Porto, Aveiro, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja (Alentejo coast) and Braga.

The “yellow notice”, the least serious, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
