PS asks the Government for periodic inspections of mopeds and motorcycles

A group of Socialist deputies on Thursday asked the Government to quickly adopt the European Union regulations on carrying out periodic inspections of larger displacement mopeds and motorcycles, considering the increase in road accidents to be worrying.

This draft resolution addressed to the executive is signed by the socialist deputies José Pedro Ferreira, Hugo Costa, Hugo Carvalho, Fátima Correia Pinto and André Pinotes Batista.

In addition to the recommendation to the Government to complete the legislative process for the implementation of community regulations for carrying out periodic technical inspections of mopeds and motorcycles with displacement greater than 125 cubic centimetersSocialist deputies also want the publication of the “technical regulatory framework on deficiencies to control in the periodic inspection of motorcycles, based on community guidelines.”

They also ask that the regulatory technical framework be completed so that inspectors can carry out the respective periodic inspections.

This group of deputies from the PS points out that “the road accidents has long been a major problem in portuguese society”, since there are” high rates of accidents and mortality on the roads.

“The entry into force of stricter and more effective road surveillance and control measures, the introduction of more severe sanctions, in particular in terms of fines and loss of points on the license, helped to progressively reduce the values of the last decade”, support these deputies.

They also highlight “the role of carrying out the compulsory inspection of vehicles in the circulation fleet in preventing and reducing the risk of accidents associated with mechanical breakdowns”.

However, there is a “growing concern about the increase in road accidents with mopeds and motorcycles”, for which these deputies consider it “relevant, among other aspects, to review the need to carry out technical revisions to this category of vehicles”.
