More than 100 motorcycles were sold per day in Portugal, in 2022

Motorcycle sales had a new record year in 2022, surpassing sales in 2021, which had already been a busiest year in this millennium. According to ACAP data, cited by the Jornal de Notícias, more than 100 motorcycles were sold per day, on average, but accidents are also increasing.

Sold in 2022 36,662 motorcycleswhich translates to an average of about 100 per day and an increase of 8% compared to 2021 sales (and 50% compared to 2017), according to the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).

Sales growth is occurring in the segment up to 125cc, which can be driven with the light vehicle driving licence. 20,432 motorcycles were sold in the segment up to 125 cc, an increase of 13.4%.

ACAP data also shows that sales in these first months of 2023 are showing signs of growth, with figures slightly up on the same period last year. “Inhabitants of urban areas are increasingly looking for alternative means of transport and two wheels are an alternative to existing traffic in cities,” says Hélder Pedro, ACAP’s general secretary, quoted by Jornal de Notícias.

The most sold brand is Honda, with a market share of around 30%, highlighting the PCX 125 city car, which starts at €3,260.

However, with the increase in motorcycle sales, the number of accidents also increases. Between January and November there were 8,978 accidents involving mopeds and motorcycles in Portugal, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same 11 months of 2021, according to data from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).
