Traffic accidents with victims. These are the most dangerous regions of Portugal

Images like these are more frequent in certain areas of the country

Faro, Coimbra and Madeira are the regions most likely to be the victim of a traffic accidentaccording to a study published by HelloSafe Portugal, a platform specialized in the comparison of financial products, namely car insurance, whose premium increases the more dangerous the area in which the driver usually circulates is considered.

Based on data provided by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), referring to the first nine months of last year, HelloSafe calculated the average number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants per region and, from there, established the classification areas where there is a greater risk of traffic accidents with victims. On the following map, when hovering over each region, the indicated number represents the average rate of traffic accident victims per 100,000 inhabitants.

The case of Faro is the most flagrant in terms of danger, since analysts conclude that there the probability of a person being the victim of a traffic accident is 40% higher than that of the Guarda district, considered “the safest”. from the country. . While the district of Faro registers an average rate of 434 accidents (among deaths, serious injuries and minor injuries), Guarda stands out positively, at the bottom of the table, with an average of 308 victims per 100,000 inhabitants. Below the bar of 344 victims follow Évora, Setúbal and Lisbon.

However, as you can see in the graph above, the main district of the country registered the highest number of incidents with victims in 2022. Last year, more specifically from January to September, there was an average of four accidents with casualties every hour and Lisbon contributed greatly to raising the average, because in this district alone there were 6,050 accident victims in the first nine months of the year, the result of 4,996 accidents in the same period. It should be noted that, between 2019 and 2021, the largest district in the country registered more than 20,000 accidents, so the fact that Lisbon appears in the penultimate place in the classification the risk of accidents with victims is exclusively related to population density, which ends up lightening the results from the perspective of an average weighting per 100,000 inhabitants. The same reasoning, but in the opposite direction, justifies that Faro, Coimbra and Madeira are the regions considered the most dangerous by HelloSafe, despite the fact that they respectively registered 1,890, 1,563 and 766 victims of traffic accidents, from January to September. .

As expected, the Porto district was the 2nd with the highest number of victims and accidents in 2022, in line with what has been happening since 2019, as you can see below. Braga appears shortly after, but the sum of the number of cases in this district, from 2019 to 2022, turns out to be practically half of the total of Porto (11,220 versus 21.162). On the positive side, Portalegre continues to stand out in this study, due to the lowest number of victims in the entire country.

With a daily average of 92 traffic accidents with victims, Portugal saw an increase in the number of accidents and victims in 2021, compared to 2020, jumping to 30,691 cases and more than 38,500 victims. According to ANSR data, from January 2019 to September 2022, national highways were the scene of 121,039 accidents, with a balance of 153,085 victims.
