European legislation on animal welfare will be changed, says the DGAV

European legislation on animal welfare will be changed, extinguishing community directives and creating regulations on the matter, said Tuesday the general director of Food and Veterinary Medicine, Susana Pombo.

Speaking in the Environment commission, at the request of the deputy Inês Sousa Real, from the PAN, the head of the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) explained that the change is due to the fact that community regulations have direct application in the Member States, unlike directives, which must be transposed.

Currently, he explained, the economic and financial impact study is expected, and the first drafts of the new regulations are expected to be ready in September or October.

In an audition to speak about sending pets to Europe, Susana Pombo admitted that there is evidence of pet trafficking. From 2018 to May 4, she said she, more than 21,000 pets were exportedmainly dogs, being the Germany the main destination.

The PAN’s request to listen to Susana Pombo was related to a TVI report broadcast in January about the shipment of animals to various European countries, and each animal would be paid an “adoption fee” of between 300 and 500 eurosthat supposedly would serve to pay the expenses inherent to the transport of the animal.

The report denounces alleged irregularities in the process, for which the PAN requested a hearing, to clarify the doubts and gaps identified in this regard.
