The Government proposes to build a desalination plant in Albufeira

The Government will propose the construction of a desalination plant in the municipality of Albufeira, Algarve, and wants to open the tender at the end of the year, the Minister of Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro, announced this Wednesday.

“According to the studies carried out by Águas de Portugal and which will be delivered for the environmental impact assessment, The place where we are going to propose the installation of the desalination plant is the municipality of Albufeira”said the minister in parliament.

Duarte Cordeiro, who was speaking at a debate on water requested by the PSD, also revealed that the water efficiency plan for Alentejo is ready and will be presented shortly.

This month, Duarte Cordeiro said, the government will award the contract to connect Alqueva to the Monte da Rocha reservoir, “with a view to guaranteeing the volume of water necessary for public supply for two years” in the reservoir.

The minister took stock of the measures taken against the drought and the optimization of the water resource, after the Government was accused by the PSD, in the voice of the deputy Bruno Coimbra, of only “waiting for it to rain.” The deputy spoke of water losses of 30%, due to the “almost non-existent use of treated water”of activities that are conditioned by the lack of water, and accused the executive of not presenting measures for “a robust policy” for water.

Bruno Coimbra also criticized that “the licenses for the use of water resources” had been replaced “by mere prior communications” and accused the Government of not having paid support for the 2022 drought.
