Seven districts of the continent are under red alert on Friday, the most serious, due to the forecast of strong maritime disturbances, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which foresees identical warnings starting on Saturday.
The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are on red alert until 3 p.m. on Friday due to disturbances at sea. Northwest waves with a significant height of 7 to 8 meters are expected.reaching a maximum height of 14/15 meters.
These seven districts will once again be on red alert between 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, and northwest waves of 7 to 9 meters are expected, reaching a maximum height of 15/16 meters.
The IPMA also issued a red alert for the districts of Faro, Beja and Setúbal between 06:00 and 12:00 on Sunday due to rough seas, with northwest waves of 7 to 8 meters, reaching a maximum height of 14/15. meters.
Also due to the strong waves, the IPMA put the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga on orange notice until 6 p.m. on Friday and then between 12 p.m. on Sunday and 3 a.m. of Monday.
The Faro district will be under orange notice until 00:00 on Saturday and then until 06:00 on Sunday and again from 12:00 on Sunday until 03:00 on Monday.
Setúbal will be under orange notice between 00:00 and 06:00 on Sunday and between 12:00 on Sunday and 03:00 on Monday.
Due to the state of the sea, the bars in Aveiro, Caminha, Douro, Esposende, Figueira da Foz, Vila Praia de Âncora, Póvoa do Varzim, Viana do Castelo, Vila do Conde, Portinho da Ericeira and São Martinho do Porto are closed throughout moment. Although mainland Portugal “will not be hit directly by the storm, an associated cold frontal surface” will pass through the territory on Saturday, causing “periods of heavy and persistent rain on Saturday night and morning in the north and center.”
The cold frontal surface is expected to pass through the Madeira archipelago during the last hour of Saturday, “although without gravity.”
“The most significant will be the increase in maritime unrest, which will arrive from the northwest with five to six meters of significant height on the 5th on the northern coast of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo,” stated the IPMA, warning, due to this meteorological situation, following the forecasts and meteorological warnings.
