Derek Eloy, the first baby in Europe conceived by two mothers

The first baby in Europe conceived in the womb of two women was born this Monday, in Spain. All thanks to the new Invocell system, which allows embryonic development to be shared between two women.

Baby Derek Eloy’s story was highlighted by Spanish newspaper ABC, marking the first time the technique has been successfully applied in Europe. Weighing 3.3 kilos and in perfect health, Eloy was born in the maternity ward of the Juaneda Miramas Hospital, in Mallorca.

This technique, used in the United States and several Latin American countries, consists of placing a device on the woman’s cervix that works as a kind of incubator, containing sperm and eggs. Therefore, it is possible that the development of the embryo during the first days occurs inside the body and not in the laboratory,” Gustavo Cartí, medical coordinator of the Juaneda Fertility Center, explained to ABC.

Five days after the start of the procedure, the medical team removes the device and checks whether fertilization has occurred. Then, it chooses the embryo it considers most viable and transfers it to the uterus. Normally, this transfer is made to the same woman. However, Invocell allows it to be transferred to another, which completes the pregnancy until birth, thus allowing both parties to participate in the pregnancy of the baby.

And that’s exactly what happened. Your ‘first five days’ [de Derel Eloy] They were transmitted inside Estefânia’s womb. The rest of the pregnancy, Azahara being the one who gave birth to the baby. In statements to ABC, Estefanía, 30, and Azahara, 27, Derek’s mothers, did not achieve happiness. “Thanks to this technique we can say that we both conceived our baby and that is something very special.”
