The death toll from floods in southern Brazil rises to 83

For him at least 83 people died in flooding in southern Brazil, according to a new report published by the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul.

According to Civil Defense, there are 276 injured and 111 missing. The same organization indicated that around 121,957 people are homeless and there are another 19,368 people housed in shelters.

The previous balance indicated 76 deaths.

The floods affected 850,422 people living in 345 of the 496 municipalities of the state. which, according to local authorities, have experienced some type of problem caused by the rains since the beginning of last week.

Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of 11 million people, has been repeatedly affected in the last year by El Niño climate phenomenonwhich causes heavy rains in the south of the country.

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, traveled to Rio Grande do Sul this Sunday, his second visit to the region since the start of the floods, and promised that there will be no bureaucratic obstacles to sending aid.

“There will be no bureaucratic impediment to recovering the greatness of this state,” declared Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, expressed concern about the federal government’s financial restrictions that limit the capacity response in the region.

In a demonstration of institutional unity in the face of the crisis, Lula da Silva arrived in Rio Grande do Sul accompanied by most of the Government, in addition to the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, who promised speed in the processing of the law to face the crisis.

The regional government of Rio Grande do Sul declared a state of calamitysituation recognized by the central government.

In Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Large areas of the central region remain flooded.. The level of the Guaíba River, which passes through the city, is almost 2.3 meters above flood level.

The southernmost state of Brazil has been greatly affected by climate change. After suffering problems with a severe drought due to the La Niña phenomenon, last year the region began to be affected by El Niño and recorded four climate disasters caused by cyclones and extratropical storms in less than 12 months.

In 2023, three events occurred in JuneSeptember and November, causing 75 deaths in this Brazilian state.
