Earthquake of magnitude 2.7 on the Richter scale recorded on Terceira Island

An earthquake of magnitude 2.7 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning in Terceira, in the Azores, an event that is part of the seismovolcanic crisis that has affected the island since June 2022, it was announced this Thursday.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the earthquake was recorded at 3:26 a.m. (4:26 a.m. in Lisbon) and had its epicenter about four kilometers east-southeast of the town of Serreta, in the municipality of Angra do Heroismo.

“No information was received confirming that this earthquake was felt,” highlighted the IPMA, in a statement.

According to the Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA), this earthquake is part of “the ongoing seismovolcanic crisis on the island of Terceira since June 2022.”

According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), mild (4, 0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9) , exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when it is greater than 10).
