What if Uber Eats starts doing self-driving deliveries?

Home delivery services, which revolutionised commerce and, above all, the world of catering, have taken a step further. The aim is to make the operation easier and, in the process, save money, by eliminating the driver of the vehicle that makes the delivery from the system, as well as the part of the costs related to the human component, which has a considerable weight.

Waymo, Google’s self-driving car division, which has already received approval to transport passengers in several North American cities, competing with taxis and companies such as Uber, signed an experimental agreement with Uber Eats in 2023. The goal then was to deliver food to customers’ homes or offices aboard Waymo’s fleet of autonomous Jaguar I-Paces.

Last year, Waymo and Uber Eats joined forces to serve customers in some areas of Phoenix, where customers could order food from a short, predetermined list of restaurants—the boxes containing the food must be placed inside the trunk of the vehicle, requiring some additional logistics on the part of the provider—and then have it delivered to their doorstep in a car driven by a “machine,” rather than a human. Now Waymo and Uber Eats have expanded their area of intervention in this city, the capital of Arizona, as well as their restaurant offering.
