Hurricane Beryl drops in intensity to Category 2 and reaches Mexico

After leaving a trail of destruction in the Caribbean and causing at least ten deaths, Hurricane Beryl has dropped to Category 2 and is moving towards the Yucatan Peninsula in northeastern Mexico after passing through the Cayman Islands.

It is the first time that an Atlantic hurricane has reached Category 1 to Category 4 strength in less than 10 hours outside of September. It is the second time that Category 5 strength has been reached in July; Hurricane Emily did so in 2005, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In recent days, the hurricane, in addition to causing the deaths of six people in the Caribbean, damaged 90% of homes on two islands in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and destroyed parts of houses and buildings in Grenada. After killing three people in Venezuela due to flooding and landslides, the situation was repeated in Jamaica, where one person died and thousands were left without electricity on Thursday, before passing through the Cayman Islands, where heavy rains and winds were felt.

The Mexican government has already issued an alert for torrential rains of 150 to 250 mm, wind gusts of 175 to 225 km/h and high seas agitation with waves reaching between 4 and 6 meters. The Mexican meteorological agency and the North American Hurricane Center continue to work collaboratively, as the hurricane is expected to reach southern Texas (USA) during the weekend.

Hoping not to repeat the tragedy of October 2023 when Hurricane Otis passed through Mexico, where 45 people died and 47 were injured, preventive measures for the arrival of Beryl advanced at a good pace. Shelters were prepared on the popular coast, small coastal communities were evacuated and even The eggs were taken from sea turtles. of the beaches threatened by the storm, according to the Associated Press.

Government officials kept the fragile sea turtle eggs covered in sand in freezers while they moved them to safer locations. In other areas, they used sandbag barriers to create safe spots to protect turtle nests from the anticipated strong waves.

More than 13,000 workers and members of the country’s armed forces, along with rescue dogs, were deployed on Thursday, The New York Times reported. Mobile kitchens and water treatment plants were also set up in Quintana Roo, a southern Mexican state facing the Caribbean that could be the first to feel the impact of the storm.

In anticipation, Mexican President Andrés Manuel advised the population to take shelter: “So far, the path of Category 3 Hurricane Beryl [agora 2] indicates that you will enter through Tulum, which is a populated area close to the sea. Therefore, it is advisable to travel to higher areas, to shelters or to the homes of relatives and friends in other locations. Do not hesitate, material goods can be recovered. The most important thing is life.”

Mauricio Vila, governor of the Mexican state of Yucatán, also invited residents to “stay informed through official channels and take all necessary precautions.”
