Ministry of the Interior assures that the “Safe Summer 2024” program will provide greater security for tourists

The Minister of Internal Affairs defended this Friday in Faro that the “Safe Summer 2024” program will provide “more and better” security conditions to national and foreign tourists who choose Portugal as a vacation destination.

Margarida Blasco stressed that this operation will allow “to provide more and better conditions of security and protection to citizens or those who choose Portugal” to spend their summer holidays.

This Friday morning, the official chaired the presentation of the “Safe Summer 2024” Program, valid between June 15 and September 15, carried out by the main security and civil protection authorities from the country.

The Minister of Internal Administration highlighted the importance of PSP, GNR and Civil Protection to promote “more integrated responses during this period”, carry out “collaborative work” and develop “coordinated and complementary actions”.

This operation is repeated every year during the summer, when there are increasing numbers of tourists in areas within the territorial area of responsibility of these forces, such as in the Algarve, where there is a substantial increase in population.

The “Safe Summer” program was only developed in the Algarve, but in 2023 it was expanded to Lisbon, Porto and beaches with greater tourist pressure, due to the increase in tourists and World Youth Day.

The National Republican Guard (GNR), for example, will reinforce the patrolling, support and surveillance, especially in areas with a larger population of holidaymakers and tourists.

The Guard’s actions cover holiday resorts, events, establishments and nightlife venues, main roads, borders, residences and forest protection.

For its part, the Public Security Police (PSP) aims to increase the feeling of security in the population during the summer season, concentrating its operational capacity in seaside, tourist and commercial areas, nightlife areas, residential areas and main roads, especially those that serve bathing areas and where there is a increased influx of people and vehiclesas well as a greater number of public transport users.

Margarida Blasco refused to speak about the negotiations with the PSP unions and the GNR associations, despite the insistence of journalists, limiting herself to repeating that she will only address this issue with the media after the meeting between the two parties scheduled for July 9.
