Etna volcano erupts again

The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology confirmed that the Etna volcano in Sicily erupted on Sunday at 02:56 local time (01:56 in Lisbon).

The eruption produced lava fountains and a volcanic cloud with the consequent rain of ash and pyroclastic fragments in an east-southeast direction.

Acireale and Zafferana are the most affected areas, where a thick layer of ash has already been detected.

The Etna eruption affected Catania airport, which is partially operational. The crisis unit at Catania Fontanarossa airport ordered the closure of sector B1 and the reduction of arrivals to six flights per hour.
