Queen Sofia of Spain attends the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases in Lisbon

The Queen Emeritus of Spain presided over the official event to commemorate World Alzheimer’s Day at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, within the framework of the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases, which ends this Saturday. The mother of King Felipe VI arrived in the capital on Friday to participate in the second day of the conference.

The night before, a few hours before the arrival of the Queen, who gave a brief speech on Saturday, a shot was fired inside the premises of the Champalimaud Foundation, causing no injuries.

The event was attended by the Minister of Education, Ana Paula Martins, and the president of the Champalimaud Foundation, Leonor Beleza. Organised by the Reina Sofía Foundation – of which the emeritus is president – ​​by the Centre for Research in Neurological Diseases of the Carlos III Health Institute and by the Champalimaud Foundation, the congress brought together researchers from around the world.

The area of ​​neurodegenerative diseases is of particular interest to the Queen Emeritus of Spain, as her sister, Princess Irene of Greece, suffers from a neurodegenerative disease. The princess’s health has worsened in recent months, but the Royal House has never provided any information about Irene of Greece’s illness.

On Friday, the second day of conferences, the Queen and the rest of those present ended the day watching a concert by Katia Guerreiro, who sang for the congressmen at the Champalimaud Foundation.
