Lisbon has 86 official points for meetings in case of disasters

Lisbon has 86 official meeting points to which citizens must go immediately in the event of a disaster and a platform online with the preventive steps they must follow to protect themselves, the city council announced this Wednesday.

In addition to the meeting points and the LXResist platform, Lisbon residents can receive SMS from the municipal civil protectionspecific alerts in the capital, for which it is necessary to register by sending the text AVISOSLX to the number 927944000.

The presentation took place this Wednesday at the Lisbon City Hall, two days before the 269th anniversary of the great earthquake, followed by tsunamiof Lisbon, November 1, 1755.

“Obviously, the catastrophe will always exist.. A catastrophe is a catastrophe and it happens anywhere in the world. But here the city shows preparation, in which people can be safe in this preparation, in seismic terms, in terms of equipment preparation, in terms of our civil protection,” said Mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD).

Carlos Moedas explained that subscribing to alert messages does not conflict with the alerts already issued by Civil Protection at the national level, since they allow more specific information for those who live or work in Lisbon. “For example, in this type of notice we can identify and immediately send people to those meeting points, that is, which meeting point is the closest to their home,” he highlighted.

The 86 official meeting points, together, have the capacity to welcome more than 600 thousand people and were established taking into account all the parishes, after being identified in a risk analysis by the municipal Civil Protection. Meeting points can be found at this link.

It is to the safest point closest to home or work that everyone must move in case of a disaster when staying at home or inside a building is not safe, such as in an earthquake, tsunami, flood, or fire. It will be from that moment on that they must “wait for the help of civil protection agents and entities with the duty to collaborate until it is possible to refer them to a Population Concentration and Support Zone,” explained the municipal director of Civil Protection, Margarida. . Castro Martin.

Carlos Moedas also highlighted that “The construction of drainage tunnels to prevent flooding in Lisbon is more or less halfway done”. The LxReSist Platform should be operational starting today and contains information that citizens can consult to prepare for a possible catastrophe.

LxReSist will help find solutions to mitigate the impact of an earthquake based on common building types in Lisbon and will teach how to protect the house and its contents (by fixing furniture to the wall, for example), how to act in the event of an earthquake, how to a family escape plan and how to prepare one equipment emergency, which must be done in advance.

So that each family is prepared in the event of a possible catastrophe, municipal Civil Protection advises that all residents or workers in the city know the meeting points close to their home, work and school of their children; prepare a family emergency plan, which establishes the responsibility of each member of the household in the event of an incident and what to do to save pets, for example; and I have prepared a equipment emergency for each person enough for 72 hours (three days).

This equipment You must have water and dry or canned food, a flashlight, whistle, battery-operated radio and spare batteries, thermal blanket, personal hygiene items, essential medications and a first aid kit, as well as documents.
