WSJ electric car trip turned into a disaster

Wall Street Magazine reported this weekend after a four-day trip from New Orleans to Chicago and back in a disastrous electric vehicle – one writer thanked for his regular car despite currently high gas prices.

magazine Rachel Wolfe’s article was titled: “I’m Hiring an Electric Car for a Four-Day Trip. I spent more time recharging than sleeping. In it, the author describes travel planning using the PlugShare app to map charging stations and estimate billing times based on the relative capacity of each public charging station. He noted that thanks to the federal government’s proposal for new infrastructure, there should in theory be more charging stations in the future.

But so far, long-distance travel in an electric vehicle has proven nearly impossible, saving only $100 and hours spent. Wolfe recalls several times that the car’s battery was almost dead; Some meetings they don’t miss. They also had to take drastic measures to limit their use of power, such as turning off their phones and turning off the windshield wipers.

He wrote: “We spent $175 on a payment in four days. We calculate that the equivalent fuel price for the Kia Forte will be $275, based on the AAA national average gasoline price on May 19. That $100 savings cost us a lot of time to wait.”

Wolfe also talked about his conversations with other passengers: “A woman who boarded us describes a recent heartbreaking journey in the Volkswagen ID.4. Deborah Carrico, 65, had to step aside twice while traveling between her Louisville, Kentucky apartment and her daughter’s wedding in Boulder, Colorado. She noted that the woman felt insecure while charging at night, and that her family encouraged her to replace her electric vehicle with an old-fashioned gas model.

Wolf concludes:

Next week I will fill up my Jetta at a local Shell gas station. Fuel costs go up to $4.08 per gallon.

I took a deep breath. Smoke has never smelled so sweet.

Democrats are pushing drivers to trash their gas-powered vehicles despite delays in affordable infrastructure and growing demand for charging on fragile power grids. In 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) banned the sale of gas-powered vehicles to the state in 3025.

While many drivers consider switching to electric vehicles due to high fuel prices, limited coverage in many vehicles, the variable performance of EVs in bad weather, and the lack of charging stations, many opt for hybrid models or conventional internal combustion engines. .
