On Friday’s PBS NewsHour, New York Times columnist David Brooks announced that he rejected his January 6 criticism of the House Committee because it was too politicized in a recent Times column.
Brooks was critical of the purpose of the committee’s investigation and did not address the broader causes that led to the January 6, 2021 incident.
“My problem is their intent,” he said. “I think the commission is fundamentally wrong. And I say – I’m more worried now – I’m very worried about what happened on January 6, 2021, but more worried about what happened on January 26, 2025 and 2029. And the committee, for me, as the defenders of our democracies, as elected officials, needs to pay attention to that. Now tens of millions of people believe that elections were stolen and that violence is justified. And many are running at the local level. How big are they? How dangerous are they? Which office do they work in? And how to understand the next January 6th threat? ”
“Secondly, I thought they were very limited in how they presented everything. It just doesn’t happen here. This is happening in countries around the world. The Republican Party is very similar to the parties in Poland, Turkey, Hungary. This is not a conspiracy. This movement originated from social conditions. How serious is the threat to our democracy in 2024 and 2025? What – how close are we to violence? If you look at the conditions abroad that led to violence, how close are we to that? How should the violence be? That’s why I’d like to see a committee focused on the future and disaster prevention rather than a committee focused on who texted Mark Meadows and when.”
