MTV VMAs: From Lizzo’s couture drama to Taylor Swift’s brilliance. The best of the black catwalk

Nobody shone brighter than Taylor Swift at this Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards gala at the Prudential Center in New Jersey: not only because her song “All Too Well” won three awards, but also because she used a creation by Óscar de la Renta from the summer 2023 collection that, more than a minidress, looked like a cascade of diamonds that slid down the body of the singer-songwriter.

The concentration of music stars tried to offer fans a colorful and varied parade. Lizzo was responsible for perhaps the most dramatic entrance of the night. In addition to a Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown created by Glenn Martens, the singer completed the look with matching gloves, dark lipstick and damp hair. During the ceremony, the singer went on stage twice. To receive an award, she wore a see-through black dress with a coned corset effect reminiscent of the famous Gaultier bodice popularized by Madonna.

A bit of everything passed through the black catwalk that led to the event. Haute couture, especially Anitta’s Schiaparelli or Becky G’s Zuhair Murad; a feminine trend towards pencil silhouettes, as shown by Sabrina Carpenter, Dove Cameron and Chloe Bailey, with their dresses by Moschino, Paco Rabanne and Zigman, respectively; and, on the masculine side, a commitment to the use of color, as demonstrated by Khalid, Toosii or Ryan Castro. Black is always a color par excellence in these events. This time it could have been a choice to call the treadmill or just the safe bet that doesn’t fail.

Harris Reed, one of the young star fashion designers of the moment, signed two moments on the arrival tape at the event. What stood out the most was Lil Nas X, who wore a look somewhere between clothing and sculpture, pants layered over a fringed structured skirt and an exuberant headpiece, all in black. Conan Gray also wore a Harris Reed look.

But the fashion moments of the night did not stop with the arrival of the artists. The ceremony was marked by a series of performances. LL Cool J, Jack Harlow and Nicki Minaj were the presenters of the event and the latter dressed in pink to give a show on stage. Lizzo opted for the same color, but with a skintight bubblegum jumpsuit, for her performance. Conan Gray also swapped his black and white arrival look for a couture Valentino in a vibrant shade of orange.

In the photo gallery we have gathered the best looks of the night.
