Indian police have revealed that rats have eaten 200 kilograms of marijuana seized in a tragic incident on the front line in the fight against drug trafficking.
Indian police accused the rats of destroying around 200 kilograms of hashish obtained from vendors and stored in premises belonging to police stations.
Judge Sanjay Chaudhary said in his ruling in this case that when the court asked the police to show the seized drugs as evidence, they were told that 195 kilograms of marijuana had been “destroyed” by rats. Rats are small animals and they are not afraid of the police and it is difficult to protect drugs from them.
The judge cited three cases where rats destroyed the marijuana, while in another case involving 385 kilograms of the narcotic substance, the police filed a report saying that some of the “hemp” was eaten by rats.
Judge Chaudhary said around 700 kilos of marijuana seized by the police were in police stations in the Mathura area and “all were at risk of contamination from rats”.
