Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu confirmed that his country has informed NATO members how Sweden and Finland support the PKK, YPG terrorist organization.
At a press conference on the sidelines of the NATO foreign ministers meeting in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday, the Turkish minister added:
He announced that the Swedish and Finnish sides had offered to work to allay Turkey’s concerns about joining NATO, at their meeting last Saturday.
Çavuşoğlu described the Swedish Foreign Minister’s statements about contact with terrorist organizations as “provocative and not constructive”.
Çavuşoğlu stressed that at the meeting, Turkey confirmed that Sweden and Finland would not accept their guarantees to withdraw their support for terrorist organizations.
He noted Turkey’s support for NATO’s “open door” policy and the importance of the unity of alliance members in the face of threats.
He added that the statements of Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, unlike the statements of his Swedish counterpart, Anne Linde, were cautious and expressed his confidence in finding a solution.
The Turkish minister stressed the need for security guarantees for Sweden and Finland to join NATO and stop their support for terrorist organizations.
He also stressed that it is unacceptable for countries wishing to become NATO members to impose restrictions on their exports to Turkey.
