At least 310 Ukrainians with temporary protection left Portugal

At least 310 Ukrainians who had obtained temporary protection in Portugal due to the war returned to Ukraine, according to data sent to Lusa by the Foreign and Border Service (SEF).

The data sent to Lusa by the Immigration and Border Service indicates that 310 Ukrainian citizens requested the cancellation of the temporary protections they formalized with the SEF, a number that stood at 160 at the end of April.

According to the SEF, requests for temporary protection were authorized for 12,377 minorsrepresenting about a third of the total.

The SEF informed the Public Ministry (MP) of the situation of 692 Ukrainian minors who arrived in Portugal without their parents or legal representatives, cases in which it is considered that there is no “current or imminent danger”.

In these situations, in which in most cases the child arrived in Portugal with a relative, the case is reported to the MP for the appointment of a legal representative and eventual promotion of a process for the protection of the child.

The SEF also informed the Commission for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (CPCJ) the situation of 15 minors who arrived in Portugal unaccompaniedbut with a person other than the parents or accredited legal representative, representing these cases “current or imminent danger”.

The request for temporary protection to Portugal can be made through the platform https://sefforukraine.sef.pt., which was created by the SEF and is available in three languages, without adults having to go to the counters. this security service. .

However, in the case of minors, it is mandatory to go to a counter of the Immigration and Borders Service to confirm their identity and affiliation.

According to the SEF, the municipalities with the highest number of temporary protections granted continue to be Lisbon (5,917), Cascais (2,452), Sintra (1,392), Porto (1,374) and Albufeira (1,116).

The war in Ukraine has already caused more than 14 million people to flee their homes -some eight million internally displaced persons and more than 6.3 million to neighboring countries-, according to the latest UN data, which places this crisis of refugees as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).
