Eleven babies were killed in a fire at a hospital in the western Senegal town of Tifwani, according to President Maki Sal.
“I am deeply saddened to learn that 11 infants have died in a fire in the neonatal ward of Tiffany General Hospital,” Sal wrote on Twitter.
He added: “I express my deepest condolences to the mothers and their families.”
According to Dub, who is also a member of the National Assembly, “the fire was caused by electrical friction and the fire spread very quickly.”
According to local media, the hospital has recently opened.
In early April, another government hospital witnessed a catastrophe that plunged the country into grief.
That day, a pregnant woman died after a long wait for a cesarean section at a hospital in the northern city of Luga.
The woman’s death sparked a wave of outrage on social media and called for reform of the country’s healthcare sector.
On April 25, 2021, four infants were killed in a fire at a kindergarten in the town of Linger in northern Senegal.
