Charles Michel, President of the European Council, said that on the 100th day of the Russian war in Ukraine, the European Union Council officially accepted the sixth package of sanctions, including Russia’s oil embargo.
“The European Union is united and will do everything in its power to end this destructive war,” Michel said on Twitter.
Regarding the oil sector, the gradual ban affects the purchase, import or transfer of crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the European Union, according to the official text of the sixth package of sanctions released of the Commission on Friday morning.
The European Union has set 6 months to fully phase out crude and 8 months for refined petroleum products.
The resolution also includes a temporary exemption for the import of crude through the pipeline to EU member states, which are dependent on Russia’s resources due to their geographical location and have no alternative options.
In addition, Bulgaria will benefit from temporary exemptions on imports of seaborne crude oil from Russia and vacuum kerosene to Croatia.
