Candida Uderzo managed to renew her license at age 100, becoming at least the third centenarian in Italy in recent years to be deemed fit to drive.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, the Italian received a new driving license after passing an eye exam at a driving school in the province of Vicenza, in northern Italy.
Candida Uderzo stated that he likes to have autonomy and not having to depend on your child to travel. The Italian added that her eyesight is so good that she can read the newspaper without glasses.
“I am happy with this renewal and it will also make me feel a little freer,” Uderzo told Corriere della Sera. “I’m lucky, I’m 100 years old and being so healthy is also a surprise for me.”
According to the centenarian, the secret of vitality goes through knowing how to enjoy life. Candida Uderzo was widowed at the age of 52 and considers that it was in her physical exercise that she found a way to keep your body and mind young.
“I started going for long walks with friends and that helped me deal with the pain. After I retired, I joined a hiking group and haven’t missed a tour since. Every Sunday at six in the morning I am ready to go.”
The Italian centenarian population is among the highest in Europe and, according to data released in early May by Istat, the Italian statistics agency, cited by The Guardian, the country has 20,456 centenarians, and it is not known how many are still driving.
Driving licenses for those over 80 years of age are renewed every two years. Drivers must provide a medical certificate to ensure they are physically and mentally fit.
A man in Sicily who turned 100 last year celebrated renewing his driver’s license by buying a new car and told local media he had never been in an accident in his life.
