New York Strengthens Legislation to Uphold Abortion Rights

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed new legislation on Monday that will protect women who want to terminate their pregnancies and the professionals who provide these public services.

This initiative takes place in a very divided national scenario, with several States that increasingly restrict this right.

The new legislation, approved two weeks ago, protects both women who undergo voluntary termination of pregnancy and health services and medical centers that perform abortions.

We are taking steps to protect our service providers from retaliation by anti-abortion states and to ensure that New York is always a safe haven for anyone seeking reproductive health care.”

The legislative measure was passed on the basis that the Supreme Court, controlled by a majority of conservative justices, would strike down abortion rights at the federal level, which will leave the power to legislate on this matter in the hands of the states.

“Reproductive rights are human rights and we are now passing landmark legislation to further protect them, and all who wish to access that right in New York State. Women here will never be subjected to government-mandated forced pregnancies,” Hochul said.

Since May 2, when a bill to prohibit the right to abortion, in force since 1973, entered the Supreme Court of the country, the governor of New York announced that would open the doors of New York to all women who cannot terminate their pregnancy in their state of residence.

Shortly thereafter, he encouraged companies providing these services in prohibitive states to move their operations to New York.
