Cartel attackers killed two priests at a state church on the Mexican border.

Cartel gunmen killed two Jesuit priests who were trying to protect another man from murder in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua. The militants then stole the bodies of the priests.

The murder took place Monday night in Serokahui, Chihuahua. According to the Jesuit Order in Mexico, the victim fled the militants and took shelter in a church. Two priests tried to invade, but three were killed by gunmen.

“Like our brothers killed today, men and women are arbitrarily deprived of their lives every day,” the Jesuit Order said in a statement. “The Jesuits of Mexico will not remain silent about the truth that affects the entire society.”

Despite the Mexican federal government’s claims to reduce violence, cartel agents control large parts of the country and go with de facto impunity. In Chihuahua, crime cells linked to the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels have openly fought for smuggling corridors in the United States for years. The place where the clergy were killed was controlled by the Gente Nueva cell of the Sinaloa cartel.

Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador said at his morning meeting that his administration was investigating the incident and had information about those responsible.
