Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed Thursday as “a unique and historic moment” the attribution to Ukraine of the official status of a candidate for membership of the European Union (EU), a decision expected by kyiv in the midst of the Russian invasion.

“I sincerely appreciate the decision of the EU leaders in the European Council to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate (…). grateful to [presidente do Conselho Europeu] Carlos Michel, to [presidente da Comissão Europeia] Ursula von der Leyen and EU leaders for their support,” he added.
Charles Michel announced that the EU Heads of State and Government agreed on Thursday to grant the status of candidates to Ukraine and also to Moldova, speaking of a “historic moment”.
