“A Quartet meeting took place in Madrid, which was attended by the leaders of Turkey, Sweden and Finland, as well as the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO),” AFP reported, citing Swedish and Finnish officials. The meeting is taking place on the sidelines of the NATO summit and is an attempt to lift the Turkish veto on Finland and Sweden joining the alliance.

In turn, the Turkish Anadolu Agency reported that four priority issues “form the most visible files” on the agenda: new measures to be taken in connection with the continuation of the Ukrainian crisis, requests from Sweden and Finland for NATO membership, proposals to strengthen the European structure alliance and show China as the same “enemy” of NATO as Russia.

The meeting was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and took place on the site of the alliance’s scheduled summit in Madrid today.
