Tensions escalate over Taiwan… and Russia accuses the US of destabilizing the world

Russia has accused the United States of “destabilizing the world” by stoking tensions over Taiwan, where the prospect of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visiting the island has angered Beijing.

And Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, wrote in Telegram: “Washington is destabilizing the world. According to AFP, in recent decades no conflict has been resolved, but many conflicts have been created.”

For its part, the Kremlin said: Pelosi’s expected visit to Taiwan is definitely provocative and will only increase tensions.

Pelosi embarked on an Asian tour this week that raised tensions between Washington and Beijing over an unconfirmed visit to Taiwan.

China on Tuesday rejected Pelosi’s possible visit to Taiwan, saying it would take all necessary measures to protect its interests.

“If China’s sovereign security interests are affected, the US side will bear the responsibility and pay the price,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing.

On Monday, the White House condemned China’s rhetoric about Pelosi’s possible visit, vowing that the United States “does not take bait or swordplay and has no interest in escalating tensions with Beijing.”

And White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized that “the decision to visit a self-governing island claimed by China is ultimately Pelosi’s.”

He noted: “Members of Congress have regularly visited Taiwan over the years.

He added: “American government officials are worried that Beijing will use this trip as a pretext for provocative and retaliatory actions such as military action such as launching missiles in the Taiwan Strait or around Taiwan.”
