Two dead and two seriously injured by lightning near the White House

Two Wisconsin Americans have died after being struck by lightning while outside the White House, in an incident that resulted in two more serious injuries.

James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, husband and wife, died of injuries sustained by lightning. that hit them in Lafayette Park, located outside the White House complex, the Metropolitan Police Department revealed on Friday.

The couple was in Washington celebrating more than five decades of marriage, their niece, Michelle McNett, told the Associated Press (AP).

They were a very loving couple. There were many close to the family and everyone is in shock,” he said, quoted by the Wisconsin State Journal.

The Muellers had five children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, he added.

Donna was a retired teacher who worked at a local furniture store, while Jim was a retired local contractor.

Michelle McNett said she wasn’t sure why the couple chose the US capital for the holidays, but stressed that Donna was “constantly interested in learning more”.

The other two injured, a man and a woman, are in critical condition.after they were also struck by lightning Thursday night, police added.

Authorities did not reveal how the victims were injured, saying only that it was due to lightning.

U.S. Secret Service and Park Police officers witnessed the lightning strike and provided first aid, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

White House press officer Karine Jean-Pierre lamented the incident which caused “loss of life”.

Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and we are praying for those who are still fighting for their lives.”
