Brazil. More than 45 thousand voters vote in Lisbon, the largest consulate abroad

A total of 80,896 Brazilian voters are registered to vote in Portugal in the presidential elections on October 2, the Brazilian Consul General, Wladimir Valler Filho, announced today in Lisbon.

The Lisbon consulate, with the largest number of registered voters outside Brazil, has registered 45,273 voters, an increase of more than 100% compared to the previous presidential elections of 2018, revealed the diplomat, who presented the organizational aspects of the first return of the elections to the media Presidential elections of Brazil in Portugal.

At the Porto consulate, the fifth with the most voters, 30,098 are registered and at the Faro consulate there are 5,525 eligible to vote, he added.

“Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no decrease in the number of Brazilian citizens coming to Portugal. On the contrary, it even increased significantly,” said Wladimir Valler Filho.

The Consul General of Brazil thanked the University of Lisbon for its collaboration, which, as in previous Brazilian elections, once again made the facilities of the Lisbon Law School available.

The increase in registered voters is reflected in the organization of voting, having gone in the case of Lisbon from the 28 existing electoral colleges in 2018 to 58 in the vote on October 2.

Asked about the security mechanism that will be installed for the vote, Wladimir Valler Filho said that he has already informed the Portuguese police authorities, who will install the device they deem necessary.

In addition to the Portuguese public security, the Brazilian consulate will again have personnel from a private company, which in 2018 were only five and now there will be 10.

Voting in Brazil is mandatory, so voters registered in Portugal and who, for some reason, are in Brazil on election day, may do so as long as they have previously formalized the request to transfer the polling place.

“In the case of Portugal we received about 30 requests in this regard,” he said.

In total, 12 candidates compete for the presidency: Jair Bolsonaro —who is running for a second term—, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Ciro Gomes, Simone Tebet, Luís Felipe D’Ávila, Soraya Tronicke, Roberto Jefferson, Pablo Marçal, Eymael , Leonardo Pericles, Sofia Manzano and Vera Lucia.

If none of the candidates obtains a majority of 50% plus one vote on October 2, the second round is held with the two most voted on October 30.

Lula da Silva leads the polls for the presidential elections (47%), followed by Jair Bolsonaro (32%), according to the Datafolha Institute.
