Porto signals independence from Brazil by rejecting political readings

The Oporto Chamber will hold on Wednesday the colors of Brazil designed within the framework of the program that marks the bicentennial of its independence, the mayor of the municipality denying Lusa extract political interpretations from her.

Brazil marks this Wednesday the bicentennial of the independence of Portugal, an event that will be attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and with the heart of D. Pedro IV, who in August, on a flight that the President of the City Council from Porto, Rui Moreira, went to Brasilia to be present as a memorial and tribute to the first king of Brazil.

Heart of D. Pedro IV is received by Bolsonaro, who remembers “God, country and family”

Porto has not wanted to stay there and has now released its commemorative program.

“We got an adequate framework (…) and we base this on Culture. Here there can be no guardianship relationship (…). I have heard comments here and there that are almost neo-colonialist, but it is not up to us to interfere in the current moment of Brazilian democracy. The important thing is that it is the 200th anniversary of a celebration between two adult peoples, two democracies and, in that sense, we look for this diversity“said the mayor.

According to the program to which Lusa had access, the commemoration begins at midnight on Wednesday, with the projection of the Brazilian flag at City Hall, which continues for 24 hours. On the same date, at 6:00 p.m., at the Instituto Pernambuco Porto Brasil, the debate “Social challenges”within the framework of the event called Forum Independence with Integration.

For Rui Moreira, the fact that Brazil is in an electoral campaign for the presidential elections that will take place in early October should not be confused with the schedule.

“We look for [ter] programming as multifaceted as possible, it could not be just one side of history, it could not be Brazil seen only from Portugal, it also had to be the presence of Brazil here”, argued Rui Moreira, recalling the “historical connection (…) of the city of Porto to Brazil, not only through D. Pedro”, but also through the inhabitants of the Porto area “emigrated to Brazil”.

Furthermore, he noted, “it was a ‘sui generis’ independence. There are not many countries that have become independent like Brazil did from Portugal. Basically, it was a peaceful process and despite having some controversy, it didn’t have the ‘pain’ that there was”in other decolonizations“.

“We can not do [leituras políticas] because those are the circumstances [eleições] and we have had strange circumstances in our country and that is not why brazil and portugal left have the relationship of sister nations who we are”, insisted the mayor.

With his return to Porto scheduled for Friday, D. Pedro’s heart will once again be on display at the Salão Nobre da Irmandade da Lapa, on Saturday and Sunday, culminating with the guard ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in the Church of Lapa. This ceremony will have a musical note in the Monumental Órgão de Tubos, with the interpretation of works by JS Bach, Marcos Portugal and D. Pedro IV.

Between Saturday and Monday, the exhibition “D. Pedro IV: A heart, a will”, in a calendar that will also mark the death of the monarch, on September 24, with the Lapa Polyphonic Choir, Banda do Army (Oporto detachment) and Filipe Veríssimo (organ), under the directed by Captain Artur Cardoso, with interpretation of works by Wagner, Caccini, Elgar, Gregson and D. Pedro IV.

His birth, on October 12, is also included in the cultural program with a new performance by the Coro Polifónico da Lapa and the D. Pedro IV Orchestra, under the direction of Filipe Veríssimo, interpreting works by Marcos Portugal and D. Pedro IV.

In between, from the 23rd to the 25th, the MIMO Festival will take place and in November two books will be released, closing the year with the exhibition “Pedro, the independence of Brazil and Porto” which premieres on December 1 and will run until March 2023.
