Elections in Angola. Constitutional Court denies appeal to the CASA-CE coalition

The Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE) filed an appeal to challenge the results of the Angolan elections, but the Constitutional Court (TC) of Angola rejected this appeal on Wednesday. According to the decision to which the Observer had access, the TC understands that the CASA-CE had to file a complaint with the National Electoral Commission (CNE) before going to the Angolan justice system.

“In order for electoral disputes to take place, it is necessary that, previously, there is a complaint with the entity in charge of organizing and conduct the electoral process at the national level”, explains the judicial body. In addition, the coalition headed by Manuel Fernandes “only presented evidence referring to the constituency of Cuanza-Norte, in which the votes contained in the summary record were verified according to procedure (272), 849 votes were counted in Cuanza-Norte” .

Angolan Constitutional Court rejects UNITA precautionary measure

CASA-CE overtook the Constitutional Court, considering that the vote count carried out by the CNE did not coincide with its count. Y pointed out as examples the provinces of Huambo, Cuanza-Norte and Benguela“in which the count made by the CNE gave it fewer votes than it should have,” says the TC.

The Constitutional Court has until this Thursday to announce its decision on the appeal filed by UNITA. Adalberto Costa Júnior’s party also asked to declare the ineffectiveness of the record of the final results of the Angolan elections, held on August 24 and whose results announced by the CNE gave the victory to the MPLA by absolute majority.

This Monday, the Angolan Constitutional Court rejected UNITA’s precautionary measure for not complying with the “cumulative assumptions of the precautionary measure” and for having already analyzed the main complaint.
