A total of 265 Ukrainian militants, including 51 seriously wounded, have laid down their arms and surrendered to Russian forces, the Russian Defense Ministry said on May 17, 2022. Those who needed medical assistance should be treated at a hospital in Novoazovsk, the ministry further states. On April 21, 2022, Russian President Putin ordered his Defense Minister not to storm but to blockade the plant where several Ukrainian fighters were resisting. On February 24, Russian troops invaded Ukrainian territory, starting a conflict that has caused destruction and a humanitarian crisis. According to UNHCR, more than six million refugees have fled from Ukraine and since then a further 7.7 million people have been internally displaced within Ukraine. The British Ministry of Defense said on Monday that many of the Russian troops sent by Russia to Ukraine as part of the partial mobilization will fight “with minimal preparation” and that they will “likely suffer a high level of attrition”.

In a report with the most recent analysis of the war in Ukraine, the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense mentions that the different groups of incorporated began to arrive at the Russian military bases on Ukrainian soil, result of the “many tens of thousands of citations issued” to reservists.

In this sense, adds the Ministry, Russia “now faces the logistical and administrative challenge of instructing the troops”

Unlike most Western militaries, the Russian Armed Forces provide soldiers with low-level initial training within designated operational units rather than training centers, many of whom have not had any military experience in years.

“The lack of military instructors and the haste with which Russia has moved forward with mobilization suggest that many of the soldiers will go to the front lines with minimal preparation. They are likely to suffer a high level of psychological distress,” the British Ministry of Defense report concludes.
