The Danish royal family is in a state of displeasure after Queen Margaret II announced that four of her eight grandchildren have been stripped of their royal titles, CNN reported.
According to the decree issued by the 82-year-old queen, the children of the queen’s second son, Prince Joachim, will not be called princes or princesses from January 1, 2023.
The princes included in the order are Prince Nikolay, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Prince Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10.
The decree, issued on Wednesday, said the four granddaughters could “use their title only as Countess and Countess of Montpezat” and that their title would be treated as a privilege in the future.
It will not affect the Crown Prince’s four children, Prince Frederik, 54, as Prince Christian, 16, Princess Isabella, 15, and twins Vincent and Josephine, 11, will retain their royal titles.
On the other hand, Prince Joachim, his wife, Princess Marie, and his ex-wife, Countess Alexandra, mother of Princes Nikolai and Felix, expressed surprise at the Queen’s decision.
Heli von Wildenrath Lofgren, Countess Alexandra’s press secretary, told CNN by phone that she was “very sad and shocked.”
He added: “She cannot believe why this order has been issued, especially at this time… because there is no good reason for it, knowing that the Queen’s grandchildren will take their titles from They will shake hands.”
The secretary, whom the countess had allowed to speak, continued: “The princes are very young, and may soon be married, why should not the queen wait for the day when they are called in happy days?”
