Japan asks UN to show firmness after North Korea’s missile test

Japan has called on the UN Security Council to show firmness towards North Korea after the latest test of a North Korean ballistic missile, which flew over Japanese territory for the first time in five years.

We believe that North Korea may carry out more provocative acts, such as a nuclear test,” Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told a news conference.

The spokesman called North Korea’s recent increase in weapons testing “a threat to the peace and security of Japan and the international community.”

Japan has tightened surveillance on Pyongyang after the North Korean regime launched a missile on Tuesday. The North Korean missile traveled about 4,500 kilometers before falling into the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The ballistic projectile reached a height of about a thousand kilometers and flew mainly over the Tsugaru Strait, which separates the islands of Hokkaido (north) and Honshu, where Tokyo is located.

It is the first time since 2017 that the trajectory of a North Korean missile includes part of Japanese territory.that Japan describes as “a grave and imminent threat” to its security and as “a clear and serious challenge to the international community.”

The United Nations Security Council has scheduled a meeting in response to North Korea’s latest test, with Japan urging the body to show firmness in the face of North Korea’s action. “The Security Council is not acting on North Korea’s recent acts, but we hope that it can play a real role in maintaining the peace and security of the international community,” Matsuno said.

The veto power of Russia and China, North Korea’s allies, has stymied several damning resolutions in recent times, especially since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, and Japan has been demanding Security Council reform.

The North Korean regime has launched more than twenty missiles this year and US and South Korean intelligence believes that it would be ready for months to carry out a new nuclear test, the seventh and the first in the country since 2017.
