The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, who is negotiating with Brussels to release European funds in his favor, has been accused of “blackmail” the European Union, when opposing financial aid to Ukraine.

The Hungarian nationalist recalled this Friday that he rejects the proposal of the European Commission to grant Ukraine aid of 18,000 million euros in 2023, in the form of a loan, whose interest would be borne by the Member States.

But he expressed his willingness to unilaterally advance a subsidy to Ukraine of 170 million euros.

This commissioner has the responsibility of evaluating the anti-corruption reforms announced by Budapest, to escape the threat of freezing 7,500 million euros of European funds.

Since April, the leaders of Budapest have been in the crosshairs of a European Union procedure (conditionality mechanism), triggered by problems of corruption and allocation of public markets in the country.

Johannes Hahn assured that the “ridiculous behavior” of Budapest “would not have an impact on the evaluation”, which should be done by the end of the month.
