The European Parliament (EP) denounced on Thursday the deterioration of women’s rights in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime and assured that respect for their rights must be a condition for the international community to maintain contacts with the Taliban.

Through a resolution approved with 532 votes in favour, the EP criticized the setback of women’s rights in the country and the attacks against school institutions who welcome the girlsand that worsened after the return to power of the Taliban in August 2021, after the US military withdrawal.

In this sense, MEPs called on the Taliban to ensure the participation of women in public life and that the international community make this practice a condition for dialogue with Kabul, and remembering the promises of the Taliban when they came to power about the return of women to the educational system.

The resolution regrets that access to information has become more difficult in Afghanistan, in addition to increasing pressure on various civil society organizations.
