Cape Verde delivers a Portuguese man sentenced to seven years in prison to Lisbon

A Portuguese detained in Cape Verde was extradited to Lisbon, at the request of Portugal, following an international arrest warrant, to serve a seven-year prison sentence, the Cape Verdean Attorney General’s Office (PGR) announced this Friday.

In a statement, the PGR indicates that in the framework of the processing of a request made by the Portuguese authorities, the Court of Appeals of Sotavento determined on November 3 the extradition of the citizen to the “requesting State, where he was sentenced to a sentence of seven years in prison”. It adds that “in compliance with this judicial decision”, the detainee was handed over on Thursday, at the Nelson Mandela International Airport, in Praia, to the Portuguese authorities, having continued his journey to the European country.

“This concludes one more request for extradition that the country receives, thus complying with the obligations assumed internationally in the fight against crime,” the note added.

In another process of cooperation with the Portuguese authorities, the PGR of Cape Verde confirmed on September 30 the arrest in the country of a citizen of Portuguese nationality, in compliance with an international arrest warrant, in a case widely publicized by the media. communication in Portugal, which is waiting for a result.

In the statement released at the time, the PGR indicates that, on September 22, a Portuguese citizen was arrested in the city of Praia for his extradition, in compliance with an international arrest warrant, with a ‘red notice’ from Interpol. .

The woman appeared at the Court of Appeals of Sotavento for a hearing, under the terms of the Convention on Extradition between the Member States of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the Internal Law on International Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters, and the arrest was confirmed, added the PGR.

The Portuguese citizen is waiting in pretrial detention, the additional terms of the extradition process.

“From the formal notification of the arrest to the Portuguese State, which took place on the 26th, the period of 40 consecutive days began to count for the formalization of the extradition request, under penalty of release of the detainee,” reported Cape Verdean. The Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) previously revealed that a woman wanted for the crime of aggravated homicide, in Lisbon, was detained by the Cape Verdean counterpart to be extradited to Portugal.

The PJ explained that the judicial authorities and the Cape Verdean Judicial Police, together with the Portuguese judicial authorities and the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Directorate of the Portuguese judiciary, located and detained a 41-year-old woman, in compliance with a warrant. International.

The Portuguese citizen was convicted of the crime of qualified homicide, which occurred on December 24, 2016, in Lisbon, the victim being her 25-year-old partner, also Portuguese.

In the course of the investigation and after learning of the crime, the accused was arrested and the coercive measure of preventive detention was applied, during which she was sentenced in the first instance to a prison sentence of 17 years, indicated the PJ.

“For reasonable legal reasons and without the sentence handed down in the first instance having become final, the defendant was finally released, beginning to flee to an uncertain place,” the statement read.

By a final and unappealable judicial decision of April 8 of last year, the first instance decision was reconfirmed, sentencing the woman to 17 years in prison, the police explained.
