Chinese authorities have announced an investigation into the former coach of the men’s national soccer team, Li Tie, one of the country’s greatest legends as a player, on charges of “serious violations of the law.”
In a brief statement, the Commission for Discipline Supervision and Inspection, the anti-corruption body of the Communist Party, in the central province of Hubei said it was being investigated by national authorities.
At this stage, the nature of the alleged crimes has not been disclosed.
According to local media reports, rumors have surfaced in recent weeks that Li had been detained while attending a seminar for professional soccer coaches organized by the Chinese Football Association.
The 45-year-old Li, who played for England’s Everton, is one of the most outstanding footballers in Chinese history, having made 92 appearances for the national team and scoring five goals.
