Belarusian MNE dies “suddenly” a day after rumors that it discussed a peace plan in Ukraine

Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei “died suddenly” at the age of 64, the state news agency Belta reported, quoted by Reuters.

The death comes a day after Makei met with the Pope’s envoy Ante Jozic, with whom there was speculation that he had discussed a secret peace plan for Ukraine. The Belarusian minister had also scheduled a meeting with the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, for this Sunday and Monday.

Russia itself has already mourned the death, via Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova: “We are shocked.”
