Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei “died suddenly” at the age of 64, the state news agency Belta reported, quoted by Reuters.
The head of Belarusian diplomacy was seen as one of the few points of contact between the Lukashenko regime and the West. This despite being one of the pawns of the Belarusian multinational dies “suddenly” a day after rumors that he would have discussed a peace plan in Ukraine
Lukashenko is known as the “gray cardinal” of the regime.
The death comes a day after Makei met with the Pope’s envoy Ante Jozic, with whom there was speculation that he had discussed a secret peace plan for Ukraine. The Belarusian minister had also scheduled a meeting with the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, for this Sunday and Monday.
Russia itself has already mourned the death, via Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova: “We are shocked.”
