Retail sales fell in October in the euro zone and in the European Union (EU), both in year-on-year and chain terms, with Portugal registering the second largest monthly increase, Eurostat announced on Monday.
In the euro zone, the volume of retail sales fell by 2.7% compared to the same month in 2021 and by 1.8% compared to September.
In the EU, according to the European statistical service, retail sales fell 2.4% year-on-year and 1.7% year-on-year.
Compared to October 2021, the largest decreases in the indicator were observed in Denmark (-9.5%), Sweden (-6.4%) and Belgium (-5.7%), while Slovenia (8.5%) ), Malta (7.2%) and Latvia (5.7%) had the biggest gains.
In the comparison with September, Austria (-4.6%), Croatia (-4.0%) and Belgium (-3.3%) present the main falls in retail sales and Luxembourg (2.6%). Portugal, Cyprus and Malta (0.5% each) and Spain (0.4%) showed the greatest accelerations.
In the same comparison, the indicator rose 1.2% in Portugal.
