Romania has started exporting gas to Moldova, a small state affected by a serious energy crisis due to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Romanian operator Transgaz reported.

????????Gas transportation startedon Saturday, say those responsible for the company, quoted by the Agerpres news agency.

This was the first time that Romania supplied gas to its neighbor through the gas pipeline that links the city of Iasi with Ungheni, on the other side of the border.

Inaugurated in 2014 with financial support from the European Union, this 43-kilometre connection has a theoretical capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters per year, enough for Moldova’s needs.

The pipeline had never been used by Moldova, that just in 2019 the call ended and 120 kilometers to the capital, Chisinau.

Until the beginning of the Russian invasion of the Ukraine, it was financially more advantageous for this former Soviet republic to buy gas from the Russian Federation, which it sold below the prices on the European market.

But in recent months, Moldova has suffered a sharp reduction in deliveries of Russian gas, on which it is almost 100% dependent.
