The United Kingdom is preparing to repeal laws that expire this year, for the exit of the European Union. The largest legislative review in the contemporary history of the country is being prepared.

Thousands of European directives accumulated over decades in British law must be repealed before they expire this year, a process that is considered the biggest law reform in contemporary UK history.

The country left the European Union on January 31, 2020, but, according to the Government, it has 2,417 community regulations, bringing the number to about 4,000 documentsaccording to the National Archives.

The standards cover areas as diverse as labor rightsa agricultural activityHe environment and the industry.

The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, inherited from the former head of Government Boris Johnson the urgency of eliminating these community directives and this week the parliament approved the mechanism to automatically revoke them, with exceptions, in less than a year.

The mechanism conceived by the Government grants it the power to replace any instrument of European legislation with articles that it deems “achieve the same or similar objectives” of a community directiveor even include the “alternative provisions” that it deems appropriate.

The British conservative executive sees an opportunity to get rid of regulations that it sees as bureaucratic obstacles, taking advantage of the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union (Brexit) to regulate in various areas, such as gene editing or robotics.

However, in light of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement that London and Brussels signed before Brexit, the UK must follow community standards in many areas.

On the other hand, if the British government allows certain European directives to lapse, in areas such as the environment and labor rights, the European Union can argue that the United Kingdom is violating the Brexit deal.
