Head of European diplomacy condemns the use of force against a peaceful social protest “that respects the rule of law” in Peru. The EU defends that crises must be faced with “respect”.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, condemned this Saturday the “disproportionate use of force” by the Peruvian authorities in response to protests against President Dina Boluarte.

In the last few hours, 50 deaths have been confirmed in the riots.

Peaceful social protest, which respects the rule of law, is legitimate in a democratic society. The European Union reiterates its condemnation of the widespread acts of violence, as well as the disproportionate use of force by the security authorities,” he said in a statement.

Brussels expects national institutions to investigate and prosecute the “responsible for abuses or violations of human rights“.

The European Union also defended that social and political crises must be faced with “full respect for the constitutional order, the rule of law and human rights”.

In the same document, Brussels urged the Government and “all political actors to adopt urgent measures to restore calm Y ensure inclusive dialogue“.

Demonstrations in Peru will continue to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, leaders and activists involved in the protests said this Friday, a day after a large demonstration and clashes in Lima and other regions of the country.

The struggle will continue in all regions until Boluarte resigns and our demands are met, elections this year and a referendum for a constituent assembly,” Gerónimo López, general secretary of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru, told AFP. (CGTP).

The protests began after the impeachment and arrest of the then Peruvian president Pedro Castillo (left), accused of having attempted a “coup” by trying to dissolve the parliament that was preparing to depose him.
